Photography Curse

Sun Feb 20, 2005, 10:53 AM
Yesterday, my lens fell apart.

50mm 1.8. It just FELL TO PIECES.

I was dropping off film to be developed, and I noticed the manual focus was sticking a little, I looked down at my camera and the top piece (that moves when you focus) was crooked. It had unstuck from the base of the lens. I have NO freaking idea how this happened.

Admittedly, the lens is only like $150 and it's plastic and cheap, but I didn't DO anything to it.

Fucker.

And since it's my only lens, I had to go buy a NEW lens.

And yes, I finally caved and bought the 85mm 1.8 USM that I've been lusting after for a year now. I'll call it an early birthday present to myself... ;)

It's a beauty, this lens. So crisp and clean. And built like a freaking tank. It'll take a lot to ruin this baby.

Oh, but my curse hadn't ended.

The roll of film I dropped off? Yeah. It's blank. I don't know what the fuck happened, but I guess it wasn't advancing properly in my camera (despite the fact that my camera was COUNTING frames, it was just stacking images on top of one another). Bastard.

Oh, this is a little cool, though...

Going to try to get my lens fixed on warranty, as I didn't do anything to it at all. Cheapo crap.

Decisions, Decisions

Thu Feb 10, 2005, 9:43 PM
I've posted some new shots. :)

All I want to do, since the sun has started to show itself and the days are getting longer, is go take pictures. I've been whoring myself around, trying to convince people into hiring me for portraits. We'll see what happens there...

We aren't buying a house anymore, but we are still going to be moving to Nanaimo. And I'm going to go to Malaspina and get my degree and blahblahblah.

Last week, I was close to just giving that up and taking pictures all the time.

I guess my better sense won out. So far... ;)

I'm feeling very drifty and undecided lately. Like a kite with a broken string?

Plague of Babies

Thu Jan 27, 2005, 10:47 PM
I've posted a handful of pictures of little Isabelle!

I took about 50 and the ones I posted are the best of the group. Some of the others are kind of repetitive and I don't want to flood my watchers anymore than I just did!

I really appreciate your comments on these, as it was my first time photographing a baby. :aww:

Such a cute little thing. The photos make me smile and I hope they brighten your day as well.

Baby Pics, School and a Question.

Wed Jan 19, 2005, 11:31 PM
First off, I'm HAPPY because I've just received my acceptance letter to Malaspina! Weeehaw! That means that we are FOR SURE moving to Nanaimo before September!

In other news, the photo shoot with newborn baby Isabelle went awesome. We had a blast. What a freaking cute kid! The whole family is awesome and it made for a fun day.

Got the pictures back and we have some rad shots. I'll be scanning them next week when I'm back at home (we're house-sitting this week) and beat everyone for some input on them!

Back to the school thing again, does anyone know of any companies or organizations I can approach about getting grants or bursaries for college? I'm in Vancouver, Canada, if that helps with your suggestions.

I need $$ so I can not get too far into debt...

Baby Portrait Time!

Sat Jan 8, 2005, 1:10 AM
Susan has had her baby! Isabelle. :aww:

They want me to come over within the next week to take pictures of the little girl.

I can't wait.

My first baby-portrait session.

Any tips/hints would be appreciated.

I'm going to use B&W again. Lots of shots of little hands and feet, probably with some mommy and daddy hands for scale. I want to do shots of baby sleeping on daddy's chest (those are my favourite baby pictures). And maybe some emotion shots, sleeping, crying, staring. All the newborn emotions.

I can't wait. I get to watch her grow and photograph each step. Yipppeee... This will be so much fun!

I've been watching so many movies. I'm trapped inside due to snow and sickness. Simon is still away. I miss him (2 more days!).

I'm feeling better today. Hopefully and happy. :)
